What is Reiki?
Reiki is the generic term that refers to a particular system of energy transference through the hands of the practitioner. This form of 'hands-on-healing' (see REIKI under CAP Tab) is based on an ancient Tibetan art of ‘healing by touch‘. This healing art had become forgotten until re-discovered by Dr Mikao Usui in the late 1800s. The words Rei and Ki are generally understood to mean (Rei) Universal and (Ki) Life Force Energy. Although based on Buddhist Teachings, Reiki is not a religion and can be experienced by people of all religions and ethnic backgrounds.
More particularly Reiki in its current form refers to the ‘USUI SHIKI RYOHO‘ ‘The Usui System of Natural Health‘. There are four main levels of competence in the USUI System:
How is Reiki applied?
It is believed by many and significantly documented, that Reiki energy is channelled through the Practitioner and into the Recipient, this energy is believed to have consciousness and awareness, ‘it knows what is needed’.
A Practitioner is not so much taught REIKI but opened up to channelling the REIKI energy, the only elements of Reiki that are taught are the standard hand positions, the symbols associated with REIKI and the code of ethics associated with the responsibility of providing energy to others.
It is believed by many that Reiki is a Gentle, Safe, Natural and Holistic way to complement other forms of medication and treatment.
During a Reiki treatment a pleasant feeling of warmth may occur along with the sensation of deep relaxation, in many cases the recipient will fall asleep.
No comment can be made regarding the efficacy or any other details relating to a REIKI treatment on this web-site, however you may wish to read the vairety of published details regarding REIKI treatments.
According to the ASA and CAP there has been no scientific evidence to support claims that REIKI can have a physical effect on the body. (see REIKI under CAP Tab)
The Reiki Treatment
The Reiki treatment lasts about one hour and involves a full body treatment, a shorter seated treatment can be arranged for people who cannot lay on a couch such as during later stages of pregnancy, with the recipient lying or in some cases sitting, fully clothed ideally in lightweight clothing.
The practitioner places their hands gently in a specific sequence of positions around the recipient‘s body, these positions relate to the Chakras and Meridians through which the life force energy is believed by many to flow nourishing the cells and organs of the physical body.
The Reiki Practitioner does not heal the recipient, it is believed by many that the Practitioner channels the energy into recipient to allow the recipient‘s own body to use the energy as it sees fit itself. (see REIKI under the CAP tab). This awareness is believed by many to assists the recipient in making the necessary changes to their attitude and/or lifestyle so that the recipient‘s health and happiness can improve.
During the Reiki treatment the recipient may experience heat from the Practitioners hands; this is quite normal and is believed by many to be caused by the flow of energy from the Practitioner into the recipient. Irrespective of the sensations felt through the treatment; or weather the recipient is awake or drifts off to sleep, the Reiki treatment is believed by many to leave the recipient feeling Calm, Energised and Relaxed, the full impact of a treatment may not be felt for several hours following the treatment.
Following the treatment you should rest for a minimum period of 30 minutes to an hour, you should drink plenty of water ideally 1.5 to 2 litres during the rest of the day following the treatment. The recipient may experience the release of pent up emotion following the treatment, this may result in a drop in body temperature and crying for a period of time. These are perfectly normal reactions.
REIKI is a complementary therapy and does not take the place of conventional medicine but is believed by many to 'complement it', should you have any concerns about receiving a REIKI treatment you are advised to consult a approprietly 'Qualified Medical Practitoner i.e. your GP'.
